Early Labor History America 1800...1900

image of early labor

The recognition of the needs of the American laborer started in the common wealth of Massachusetts.  The first child labor law was passed in year 1836 , where employment of children from ages of 15 and down was prohibited from being in incorporated factories, unless they went to school for three months earlier of the year of their employment.  A trade unit was considered unlawful and its community weren’t held responsible for the illegal tactics that were held upon individuals, Shaw ruled that having a protest for a closed shop was legal. When Famer's sons, Discharged soldiers, and a new group of immigrants filled the industrialized cities in America, new labor issues increased. The Government's eagerness to step in , in dealing with bad working conditions in industrialized cities were affected by the principles of laissez faire, which meant " Functions of the state should be limited to police and foreign protection. Public education werent allowed , no limitation of hours of labor , no welfare legislation. These issues arose and caused other problems such as delayss in factory inspections,  laws cut  down n the number of hours spent working, laws forbid sweatshops, where families resided and worked in one room homes. The economy got better knights mission was to increase negotiating powers by unionizing all the american workers.

And whle the Abolitionists worked to abolish slavery and racism through the years , their plans and tactics continuously evolved. The era between the American Revolution and the 1830's was the first time of transformation. The beginning was an elite Abolitionist movement in Pennyslvania while the post Revolutionary time slowed down to an egalitarian movement in Massachusetts in the 1830's. There were alter in locations , abolitionists strategies , and tatics.  In Pennyslvania , where they needed support to end slavery from the politicians. Changes in American political culture and the social life of the society had an influence on abolitionists transformation during the 1820's into the early years of the 1830's starting with the stories and beliefs of revivalism down to the upcoming prominence of free black and female activits.Massachusetts agitators took hold of the cultural change to turn the abolitionist movement into an revolutionary force to go against Pennyslvania's traditional ways of reform.

Slavery Treatment in the 1800's

this picture displays the aftermath of the pnishment of the slave

The treatment of slaves in was rarely any good.  Plantation slaves were actually called field hands. They had jobs to attend to, such as to plant crops and pick the cotton in the fields.  In the home of the master's house slaves worked as servants and was demanded to do house chores like washing clothes and cooking dinner.  Some of the other slaves who also worked on the plantations became trained had jobs like blacksmiths, carpenters and cabinetmakers.  Slaves didn’t always work in houses or in the fields they began to make progress and switched to taking business into working in factories and while some others were construction workers on canals and railroads, some slaves worked in mines.  Owners didn’t want the slaves to be educated because whites thought slaves would get courage to run away.   Some slave owners didnt treat their slaves as bad but then again most of the owners did.  Apart of the poor treatment slaves were punished or threatned.  When slaves worked in groups they were often worked alot or punished. Some who worked as the owners servants was treated as family sometimes.  In some cases slaves werent owned anymore if the owner died only when the owner had a will stating them becoming free if they were to pass.

They were called Indians, American Indians and now they are permanently called Native Americans. They moved to all regions of the land and were molded into bunches of tribes or nations. Even outsiders learned to deal with their ways and started making do with the resources that was provided. They equipped into respecting the land and many things it provided. The Holocaust for troubled jews was a horrifying death experience. In 1933, the Jewish population in europe was increased over nine million. Most jews resided in countries where Nazi's were highly populated during the World War 2.By the year of 1945, Germans and their nation murdered about 2 out of each 3 Jews as apart of the "Final Solution. The Nazx's were controlled to murder the European Jews. The Nazi's thought of Jews as a threat to Germany, they were the main targets of the Nazi assasinations. The killing spread and they started killing rapidly. Between 2 or 3 million Soviet prisoners of war were killed , or died because of being starved , and or diseases , or not being taking care of.A man came about with the name Adolf Hitler. He felt jews were the bottom of everything. If they werent blue eyed and blonder hair they werent worthy of him. Hitler controlling the Nazi's as his army killed many jews , sent them to concentration camps .Seperating them from their families, if you were hidng out and found you were tortured and brutally murderd.Being in concentration camps jews developed diseases and died. Some where burned to death or tortured. The holocaust ended in the year 1945 , after WW2. Jews that got out safe were very lucky theres been no discrimination against jews since then.

child labor

This picture displays during the Industrial
Revolution children working in the factories against there will on the machines.

Child Labor began in the Industrial Revolution , Children that were as young as the age of six years old worked hard amount of hours for little fees or no money at all.  Kids worked up to 19 hours a day with a break of one hour.  This was just extremely severe ,but it wasnt common for children who worked in the factories for 12 to 14 hours with the same little breaks.  Children also suffered horrible working conditions , conditions that was so severe body parts sometimes got decapitated if machines werent handle in a specific way.  The year of 1833 there was a turning point.  Children was only payed only a fraction of what the adults were payed.  Even sometimes they werent even payed.  Orphans would be the prime victims during the child labor struggles.  Children who were infact older than 16 worked more hours at night.  The machines in some ways were physically easier than picking cotton or whatever products that were demanded  .Picking cotton was infact easier because of the less physical damages of the children or the adults. If products werent made straight down to the core , some would be severly injured by whoms in charge.  Child Labor finally saw the light of extinction in the year of 1938 on june 25th , by Franklin D. Roosevelt.  FDR demanded to prohibit children employment in jobs under the age of 18 if working at jobs that are dangerous.

womens suffrage

this picture displays a life lived of a women with little to no rights having to do house wife chores.

since earlier years women werent considered as important as men. They were considered intellectually inferior to men but also a major source and temptation and evil.  Women were displayed as being squeamish and weaker as aposed to men who were bright and strong minded and also the weight of the families.  During the 1800's women wasnt able to vote and they were displayed as stay at home mothers.  Women could not work because financials was the mans job .Women would work in the factorys with children to produce things, women didnt have say in politics such as voting, and many jobs except factory werent guaranteed to women also. But all had a turning point through the years.  In 1839 a law was passed that if marriages didnt last the children can be under the mothers responsibility.  In 1857 women could leave their husbands if they were treated unfairly. 1870 women was allowed to keep ownership of the profits they made after work. 1891 women werent forced to live in the same residence as their husband if they didnt choose to.A big alteration in womens life were the journey for the  rights to vote it was established in year 1848 on july at the seneca falls women rights convention. But the actual conformation of being allowed to vote was in the early 1920's.  Womens total rights change womens place in the world and society.

slavery in the united states

The peak of the American Revolution, 20 percent of the population in the thirteen colonies was of African race. The legalization of owning slaves started in every colony. The Financial realities of the southern colonies caused the institution to legalize in Massachusetts in 1641.During the revolutionary era, most of African Americans lived in either Virginia or Maryland they made up more than 50 to 69 percent of the population.
Slaves were sold by theyre owners , sometimes them being sold was because of a punishment or for profit. They were not taught to read because slave owners didnt feel that they should be bright and educated. But at dusk slaves would educate themselves with books and began to interprate things and read to have a natural understanding of life.slaves would work from sunrise to sunset in the field , the most needed crop was cotton. As for families , mothers and children were seperated. When a female slave grows up they are demanded to have children , sometimes they are tooken against there will and raped by their owners.Young slaves such as young girls would have to have children so their would be more slaves for work. When slaves get hitched the masters would put a broom down and they would jump over it to pronounce them husband and wifes.
